Things to Know about Your Wheelchair Battery Charger
from:
Did you ever realize that your wheelchair battery charger must be fully operational in transferring electricity? How about the proper function of the charger? For you to find out how wheelchair chargers affect the efficiency of the battery is your primary concern.
Stored electric energy in your battery is an essential part of your powered wheelchair. Moreover, it’s the lifeline of your electric wheelchair as without it, you cannot move into your desired position. The battery is very essential for everyday living, especially for those who depend on their electric wheelchair as their primary source of transportation. Because if you alone depends on the battery for mobility, it is very crucial for you to be sure about the capacity and the proper charging of the battery.
In electric wheelchairs, there are lots of newly designed batteries that can suit your needs. Wheelchair batteries are designed to be reused for a number of times. For using it all over again, you must have a compatible charger on it. In wheelchair batteries, there are currently three types available in the market, the first is wet, gel, and last is AGM. For in these different types of batteries, you must have the specific chargers for it. It’s very important to line up the right charger to the right battery. This is because some chargers offer dual modes for you and can allow charging either wet or a gel battery.
Wheelchair chargers are classified into two types and these are:
• Manual- it constantly require supervision for if it’s not plugged out after battery is fully charged, it can permanently damage the battery in time.
• Automatic- it automatically monitors the charge in the battery. It can lessen the rate of charge when it senses the battery is reaching to a full charge. It automatically shuts off when the battery is fully charged. This means that you don’t have to constantly monitor the charging time of your wheelchair battery.
You must also consider the selection of the charger you may use, because in some countries, power transmission standards are different from others. For instance, in the United States, the standard transmission is 110 V at 60 Hz, whereas in Europe, the standard for power transmission is 220 V at 50 Hz.
In buying your preferred wheelchair battery you must consider safety issues in using them:
• Sensors must probably be built into the charger and wheelchair to detect the connection between the wheelchair and the battery if it’s correct.
• The wheelchair, charger, and the batteries may also be protected by using connectors that only allow proper connections.
• When you purchase a single purpose charger, the charger should match the charging configurations required by the battery
• Purchased chargers must meet the power standard requirements of the local country’s power supply.
• The wheelchair movements must become inoperable when the batteries are being charged.
• Lastly, a charger should not be left plugged in to the battery for over 24 hours as it can permanently damage the battery or can cause incidents like battery acid leaks or fire.
Finally, before purchasing your preferred wheelchair charger, you must consult your local dealer to find out which charger will suit you best. Then, if you finally purchased the charger you need, better read the manual before using it. It is best for you to follow all the directions for safety and can make your battery last longer. The charger manual will also include safety guidelines when charging the wheelchair battery.
