Task Force Chevy Trucks of 1955
from:
All of Chevy’s pick-up trucks that you use to see running down roads and highways today are inspired by its ancestral models before. After Chevrolet’s introduction of the first overhead valve (OHV) six-cylinder engine in 1929 which replaces the old four-cylinder, new truck models at that time started to emerged which can move more heavy loads at a short time.
Prologue: Advanced Design Series of 1952
One of the most remarkable developments of Chevy trucks were the time the car enterprise introduced the new Advanced Design Series in 1952. It now made use of the OHV six-cylinder engine which has a capacity of 216.5 cubic inches. It has net power of 90 horsepower and net torque of 174 foot-pounds, giving more power for such trucks to carry and deliver heavier loads compared to its previous models.
Chevy pick-up trucks included in the Advance Design Series every year were number one in units sold compared to its arch-rivals in the automobile industry. However, the demand for more sophisticated truck engine started to grow that time. The automobile industry switched from the OHV six-cylinder to more powerful OHV V8 engine.
Although Chevrolet had been left in producing automobiles equipped with such high-performance engine, it does not necessarily mean that they were left behind. In fact, in the year 1955, they became the power leader once again in pick-up trucks.
Task Force Truck Series of 1955
Chevrolet called their 1955 Chevy trucks as their “Task Force” Line. Task Force is a naval term; the word “Task” generally refers to a specific task or work that the Task Force needs to accomplish and the word “Force” refers to the innate power with which they need to accomplish the assigned task or work.
The 1955 pick-up trucks included on the Task Force series were all new. One of their styling hallmarks included the truck industry’s first wrap-around windshield, which is dubbed as the ‘Sweep-Sight Windshield”. Other interesting features of 1955 Chevy trucks included covered headlights in visored fenders, a classic egg crate grill, running boards obscured behind the cab doors, and the optional full view rear window.
There are also features for driver’s convenience and ease of operation. These were the following:
• Power steering;
• Power brakes;
• Overdrive for half-ton pick-ups;
• Key-turn starts;
• Tubeless tires;
• 12-volt electrical system; and
• 4-speed automatic transmission, which is included specifically on Chevrolet’s Series 3000 pick-up trucks.
Here are some of the 1955 Chevy trucks included in the 1955 Task Force series.
• Model 3104 half-ton pick-up truck- it has a 114-ince wheelbase and can carry 78 1/8-inch long by 50 inch wide and 17 9/16-inch high cargo box with flat flares. It also has a rugged hardwood floor with steel skid strips and an optional side-mounted tire carrier. It is equipped with the standard OHV V6 which has a 123 net horsepower and has a capacity of 235.5 cubic-inches which can produce net torque of 210 foot-pounds. It is also available in OHV V8 which has a capacity of 265 cubic-inches and can produced 132 net horsepower and 249 foot-pounds gross torque.
• Model 3604 3/4 –ton pick-up truck- it has a 123 ¼-inch wheelbase chassis and can carry the same size and dimension of cargo box as that of the half-ton. It is also equipped with the same engine and transmission options as that of the half-ton except of unavailable overdrive.
• Model 3804 one-ton pick-up truck- it has a 135-inch wheelbase chassis and can carry a 108 ¼ inch by 50-inch wide and 17 9/16 inch high cargo box. It is equipped with the OHV V8 engine. Its transmission options included an HD 3-speed and 4-speed synchronal, and a 4-speed automatic.
• Model 3124 Cameo Carrier- it has payload capacity of 5,000 pounds and have the same characteristics as other half-ton trucks, thus keeping the utility and toughness of Chevy trucks.
1955 Chevy trucks are just some of the collection of trucks that has been part of the Chevrolet’s history and inspiration as well in producing much powerful and useful pick-up trucks today.
